This Week on the Island 09/10/2017

‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
The Weather: Hurricane Irma. It’s coming. It’s not going to get us. It changed and now it is coming at us. It’s a Category 5. Now it’s a Category 3. Nothing is constant except change.
The week started with the chance of a hurricane coming toward us.
I need to be in Miami VA for complete knee replacement surgery on Thursday at 7:30 AM.
The Labor Day hurricane of 1935 killed over 400 people.
I put up the storm shutters.
On Wednesday, we drove to Miami to an Extended Stay Hotel.
The surgery was cancelled. So, on Thursday we looked at the predictions for the hurricane and saw that it was coming to Miami. Key West and the Florida Panhandle were the only parts of the state that were not in ‘The Cone of Death’. So, we went back to Key West.
By Saturday the predictions had changed and the hurricane had moved toward the west with Key West in its way. The good news is it is a category 3. The next 24 hours will be challenging.
Key West is empty.
More on my Facebook page as it happens.

This Week on the Island 09/03/2017

‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
The Weather: Same as last week. Hot and humid until November with a chance of a hurricane. This is the sunrise across the Key West Bight as seen from Conch Republic Seafood looking toward Schooner Wharf.
No book this week.
We are in the ‘slow’ season. It is September and kids are back in school. This weekend, Labor Day Weekend’ is the last excitement before the dull happens. The folks working with the tourist will have a hard time paying bills until the tourist return for Fantasy Fest, the week before Halloween. So here is a picture of the paint drying on the Shuffle Board in Half Shell Raw Bar.
ALSO, this is the height of Hurricane Season. As a matter of fact, there is one coming toward us now. It should get here next week.
Our plan, as always is.
In reality, it is way too early to know which way this one is going. So, we will sit and watch and wait for Hurricane Irma.
The maned toll booth on Card Sound Road is being replaced by an electronic one.

This Week on the Island 08/27/2017

‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
The Weather: Same as last week. Hot and humid until November with a chance of a hurricane. Eclipes from Key West, Pic from George Howard Crenshaw's Facebook Page.
The book this week was the same as last week ‘Honorable Revenge by Mike Pettit. I have been a little busy.
Tim has left the island. RIP my friend.
Took a road trip to MM103 in Key Largo. Stopped at Hog Heaven for lunch. This is Hailey.
This is Hailey’s office.
This is the view from Hailey’s office.
This is the small island you can see in Hailey’s view.
This is looking back from the island across the lagoon.
We also stopped at John Pennekamp State Park.
This is Rowell Park.
No road trip would be complete without a stop at the restrooms at MM39, Veterans Park.
And no week would be complete without listen to Michael McCloud at Schooner Wharf Bar.
