This Week on the Island 08/21/2005

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: Sunny and hot.

This weeks book was 'The Last Resort' by Alison Lurie. This is about an older writer and his young wife who come to Key West for vacation and to get out of the cold North for the winter. He is really planning to kill himself because he thinks he has cancer. She falls in love with a woman in Key West and he finds he only has hemorrhoids. Not much of a story.

This has been a slow week, but we are into the slow season. School has started back so most tourist have gone home. We still have the cruise ships loaded each day and we still have a few hundred people for Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square each night, but there definitely less tourist. All bars/restaurants have empty seats so many places encourage their employees to take vacation this time of year, so it is really nice. I can actually move my car and find a parking place when I get back. It may be hot, but I really like the next two months.

Captain Tony's 89th birthday was great and his bar was packed. I think he had a good time.

Bud of 'Bud's Building Supplies' died this week. He was well known by many and will be missed.

Four members of the Southernmost Parrot Head Club went up the Keys to PARROTDISE at mile marker 28.5. Coming from the mainland you would pass MM29, go across the bridge and turn right. Go about 1/2 mile and it is on the right. Pictures at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KeyWestPictures/ .

Some of us went to Geiger Key (MM14) for $8 Lobster Saturday night. We found the Geiger Key Marina and had a wonderful time. It is a locals kind of place where some come in by boat. The lobster were great.

Our local Parrot Head Club is having a sunset cruise on the Sebago this Sunday night. More next week.
