This Week on the Island 08/03/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘baby turtles’. Turtles hatched on the beach at Fort Zack this week.

The Weather: Sunny and about 86 degrees. A lot cooler that some other places in the country.

The book this week was ‘Phaedra’ by Jean Racine. I noticed a boat in the bight with that name and got curious.

Wednesday started the 2 day ‘Mini Lobster Season’. Most of us locals hate it. People are everywhere, diving in the water and trying to get lobster for free. They don’t know the rules, or they don’t follow the rules and they make the water unsafe for everyone. The good news is the regular lobster season starts the first part of August. I like lobster but I stay out of the water during mini-season. The first death this year was a guy from Miami on the first day and before 9:00AM.

A few weeks ago I mentioned Monsignor Anthony Delcorie (Father Tony) and how he was performing marriages and he wasn’t a priest. Well he got busted. According to Sundays Key West Citizen newspaper, he is a 61 year old deadbeat dad, a convicted felon, and a Vietnam vet that shot himself to get out of the service. He is also wanted for raping his own 4 year old daughter.

Rumor has it that: (1) Harbor House, the construction behind Schooner Wharf has gone bankrupt. (2) The house next to me, valued at $1.6 million about 2 years ago, on the market for $600,000 this year, has now gone into receivership. (3)Key West is talking of building a ‘Water Park’ on the waterfront next to Truman Annex. (4) Key West wants to take over Higg’s Beach from the county. (5) and let’s not forget the constant rumor that Jimmy Buffett is in town. (He even has a song about ‘I heard I was in town’.)

Key West, You have got to love it
