This Week on the Island 09/21/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Weather: Beautiful.

The book this week was ‘Catch-22’ by Joseph Heller. Reminded me a lot of the TV show MASH.

September is slow in Key West. It is the height of hurricane season and the start of school, so most people are too busy to take vacation. Some business’ close for a week or two in September to give their employees a break.

I spent the first part of the week kayaking and bike riding.

This weekend was ‘Poker Run’. The bikes stop at certain places along US#1 from Miami to Key West and pick up (buy) a card. The one with the best hand, when they reach Key West’ wins. Motorcycles are everywhere. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ThisWeekontheIsland/ click PHOTOS then click CYCLES.

This weekend was also ‘Roll the Bones’ a pirate festival. We also had ‘Talk Like A Pirate Day’ and ‘Drink Like a Pirate Day’. Mixed in with this was the campaign for King and Queen of Fantasy Fest 2008. The theme this year is “Pirates, Pundits and Political Party Animals.” All the local restaurants/bars had parties to attract the bikers and pirates. Schooner Wharf had it annual ‘Welcome Party and Hog Roast’, their ‘Paradise Tattoo Contest’, and their ‘Beach House Bikini Show’. Hurricane George (Sept 25, 1998) caused a lot of damage to Key West, especially along ‘House Boat Row’ (it doesn’t exist anymore.)
