This Week on the Island 08/23/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) ‘Jo’s Parrots’. I purchased this parrot for Jo’s birthday in February 2007. Monday night someone took it. It was chained to our front porch. Reward for safe return.

Weather: Tropical storms Ana and Claudette along with Hurricane Bill all missed us. The weather here has been beautiful.

The book this week was ‘Chasin’ the Wind’ by Michael Haskins.

Things Tourist Say: ‘Are the wild alligators tame? (If they were tame, how could they be wild?)

More WWII military ordinance was found in the Keys waters. This time up in Boca Grande. A diver found some bombs and the Navy was called to secure the area. These ended up being practice bombs filled with concrete.

I haven’t mentioned ‘sex on the reef ‘this year. It happens every August when the annual coral spawning takes place. The spawn is luminous and lights up the waters at night.

Thursday morning while sitting on the porch doing my Sudoku’s for the day, who should come jogging by but one of my old karate instructors, Marty Knight. Many years ago I was into karate and worked my way up to black belt.

The Meteor, next to the Green Parrot, has closed again. No more Bar-B-Que ribs.

The old Harris School on Southard Street, valued at $7.8 million was sold to a developer for $4.5 million. The Hickory House Restaurant purchased by local government for over $3 million was put out for bids. The only bid offered was $1 a year. No wonder we are going broke.

Chris Flowers used to play keyboard with Michael McCloud. His mug shot is at http://www.keywestmugshots.com/2009/08/02/CHRISTOPHER-LEE-FLOWERS/ .
He was arrested for AGGRAV BATTERY – PERSON USES A DEADLY WEAPON,

HISTORY: We all know that July 4, 1776 The Declaration of Independence was approved and we went to war with England. We all know that Sept 17, 1787 The Constitution of the United States was approved. We all know that George Washington was elected the first President of the United States in 1789. BUT --- who ran the country from 1776 to 1789. There were 8 presidents before George Washington and the first one was John Hanson. Google it or go to http://www.marshallhall.org/hanson.html
