This Week on the Island 09/20/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weather: Sunny, hot and humid.

The book this week was ‘Charles Kuralt’s America’ by Charles Kuralt. There is a chapter on Key West that is only 26 pages. I would suggest it as ‘good reading’ to anyone.

Things Tourist Say: ‘Can I ride the Conch Train to Cuba?’ I guess that depends on how long you can hold your breath. Cuba is 90 miles south and there is no bridge.

Global warming! The high tide Monday morning was pushing the ocean water up the street drains and into the streets. The corner of Caroline and Green was deeper than I have ever seen it. In reality it is approaching new moon (Sept. 18) and lunar perigee (Sept. 16). The perigee is when the moon is closer to the earth than normal and causes strong gravitational pull on the tides.

This week was bike week. Lots of motorcycles everywhere. They like to ride down Lazy Lane (pass Schooner Wharf), take a left on Elizabeth and another left on Caroline and race as they pass my house so they can take another left on William and then go down Lazy Lane again. They also like to ride down Duval pass Sloppy Joe’s and down to Hog’s Breath. They are loud and noisy but they tip well. I like the bikes (not the noise) and all the leather these guys wear in 90 degree heat, they must be crazy. Some of them have nice looking ladies. Lorenzo Lamas was in town for the bikers and was at Schooner Wharf for the hog roast on Friday night. The tattoo contest and the bikini contest were at Schooner on Saturday night.

Some friends from Orlando were in town this week. They went to Blue Heaven and Louie’s Backyard only to find both of them closed. (Lots of businesses close in September due to lack of customers). They came to Schooner and we had an adult beverage.

Randy Acevedo, the Ex-Superintendent of Key West Schools, did NOT receive any jail time although he was found guilty of 3 felonies in his wife’s thief of monies from the school system. The bubba system is alive and well in Key West.
