This Week on the Island 03/13/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Spring Breakers’. I lifted this from www.conchscooter.blogspot.com

Weather: Beautiful sunny days, then another cold front on Thursday night (low 60’s) and back to beautiful for the weekend.

This week I read ‘Star Island’ by Carl Hiaasen.

I took my monthly drive to the gas station and filled the little Suzuki; it took a little over 6 gallons (not bad for a month of driving). The cheapest gas I could find last Wednesday was $3.79 a gallon.

We are about at the end of the dry season. While you have the wet in the winter and that makes it feel even more miserable, we have the dry in the winter and the wet in the summer when it is nice and warm. Of course when the rains come the humidity will rise and the mosquitoes will come back. I don’t know how people lived here in the summer before mosquito control and A/C.

Since the first week end of March, the Spring Breakers have been here. Easter is the last Sunday in April this year, so we will have 8 weeks of Spring Break. I love the young kids. Things have not changed much since I was that age. Kids still do the same things. Everything changes but remains the same.

A house near us was rebuilt. They raised the house off the ground, gutted the down stairs and rebuilt it, then gutted the upstairs and rebuilt it, then put on a new roof. Now they can’t get a ‘Letter of Occupancy’ because there are different rules for rebuilt houses and new houses. They did so much new stuff to the house it is considered a new house and not a rebuild. New houses have to be 4 foot higher off the ground. Now they have to raise the house another 4 foot higher.

Taxcut from last week: I decided to go with what I had already keyed into Taxcut Online. My return was rejected by the Fed. I corrected it and resubmitted. Next year I will download Taxcut to my PC so I can check the forms before E-Filing.
