This Week on the Island 04/24/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is Bird of Paradise’ growing on a fan palm. Picture #2 is a WWII landing craft (remember D Day) this one is used to take large items to Sunset Key. Picture #3 is Boca checking out what is left of The Hedge Hotel. The homeless used to sleep here, hence the name The Hedge Hotel.

Weather: Very sunny, in the mid 80’s with a nice breeze, but dry. It is like fall with all the leaves dropping from the trees due to lack of rain.

This week I read ‘Wreckers’ Key’ by Christine Kling.

Happy Easter, I hope you found all the eggs.

This week we didn’t have anyone in from out of town. It was wonderful. We really like to see our friends, but it is also good when they go home.

George Strait, http://www.georgestrait.com/, is recording at Jimmy Buffett’s recording studio (Shrimp Boat Sounds) on the Key West Bight at the corner of Elizabeth and Green.

The best fried chicken on the island, according to my wife and I, is Dion’s fried chicken. Maybe that is the reason Kentucky Fried Chicken has closed in Key West.

Thursday, we received an invitation to a meeting to discuss the HOTEL that is in the works for the vacant land behind Schooner Wharf.

Friday, Schooner Wharf Bar had the kick-off party for ‘Conch Republic Days’. On April 23,1982, Key West seceded from The Union when the US Federal Government used the Boarder Patrol to block US#1 at Last Chance Saloon in Florida City. The Federal Government was looking for drugs; Key West was NOT getting any tourist. We assumed that since the US Government used the Boarder Patrol, they must consider the Keys as NOT being part of the US. After the rebellion, the US Government took down the road block and Key West became the Conch Republic.
