This Week on the Island 11/13/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first picture this week, (click to enlarge) is ‘Big Thunder flipping’. The second picture is ‘The races at Mallory Square’. The third picture is ‘Boats parked at Conch Republic’.

Weather: 64 degrees last Saturday morning. In the 80’s the rest of the week with lots of sunshine and low humidity. Tropical Storm Sean is off the coast and kicking up some surf.

The book this week was ’When Elves Attack’ by Tim Dorsey. Serge is again on the prowl in Tampa, Florida, but he only kills people that need killing. A lot like Dexter on Showtime. I also started ‘Mile Marker Zero’ by William McKeen. A great book about the writers of Key West.

This week ‘Off Shore Power Boat Racing’. Watch it on you-tube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuqHteGnoUY
Wednesday, ‘Big Thunder’ caught wind and flipped, killing both the driver and the throttle man. Seven have died in Key West powerboat races since 1985. There were two other wreaks this week

There were lots of tall, large breasted, tan blonds in town this week. I guess every boat needs one.

11/11/11 - We had lots of weddings here in Key West.

11/11/11 – Veterans Day. I hope you at least watched the parade. We had a great one here in Key West. When the men came home from WWI and WWII they were heroes and there were lots of parades. When the men came home from Korea (the police action) they were ignored. When the men came home from Vietnam they took off their uniforms so they would not be spat on or cursed and called ‘baby killer’. Now it is good to see that honor to serve is back.

Mixing the 3 events mentioned above (Power Boats = lots of people, Veterans Day Parade, and people getting married on 11/11/11) and you get ‘total gridlock’ at the churches downtown. There were lots of people that were late or had to walk some distance to get to the church on time. There were others that couldn’t cross Duval (because of the parade) to get to the beach for their wedding.

Met some nice folks, Roland and Jackie Baird, from the St Louis Parrot Head Club at Schooner.

I have some other friends that come down all the way from Orlando and have seen them all over the island this week.
