This Week on the Island 11/20/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Tuesday we had to cut the A/C back on. In the mid 80’s with lots of humidity. By the weekend we had another cold front come thru. The temperature stayed the same but it got rid of the humidity. ‘I would rather be here, drinking a beer, than freezing my a - - in the north’. Michael McCloud, The Conch Republic song.

The week I finished ‘Mile Marker Zero’ by William McKeen. A great book about the writers of Key West and some of the Key West history of the 70’s. I started ‘Bone Key’ by Les Standiford.

This week was ‘Nothing’. A nice quite week for us locals to enjoy Key West without so many tourists.

Today is 11---20---20---11 (11/20/2011) Someone somewhere will have something to make of that.

When I was a kid I used to get my pants legs caught in the chain on my bicycle. Women had pants that came half way between their knee and their feet and they were called ‘peddle pushers’. These ‘peddle pushers’ kept the women from getting their pants caught in their chain. Fast forward to 2011 and we have men tourist walking around Key West wearing ‘peddle pushers’. This being a fishing and military town, it makes some of use look at these men and question. I can only presume that the pants were a gift from their wife and they have to wear them. I guess I am getting old.

The folks that own Sunset Key, just of Mallory Square, have been trying to develop Christmas Tree (Wysteria) Island. It has been a bad fight, but this week the Federal Government said the island belonged to them. I expect to see a long fought court case on this one.

Speaking of developments. The property that used to be Jabours, across Caroline Street from our house, has not had any seeable progress. It is suppose to be developed into a 96 room hotel.
